Today’s trip found me trying to find fish in 6 to 10 foot of water thinking that the fish had moved out with all the falling water. We have lost around 3 to 4 foot of water since the stable water article was written in December. After an hour or so trying to make the flipping bite work, I moved up to 1-1/2 foot water and started catching fish. We had a good day with our best 5 going over 26 pounds. All the good fish came on White JoBaby Spinnerbait. One fish was caught flipping a Zoom Speed craw Watermelon Red in 5 foot of water. Today we fished from marker 8 to the dam. We found several areas with fish to 6 pounds on points. The forecast is for cooler nights so we will see how long the shallow bite holds. I’m off to the Corpus Christi Boat show this week. More updates when I return to Zapata.
The pros are finding awesome fishing at Falcon Lake for the first tournament of the year on the Stren FLW tournament trail. Today was the third day and stringers are heavy for the third day in a row. The fish are still moving up in the first wave of the spawn. With the water dropping at the same time finding four days of fish in one area is challenging but the smart fisherman are moving and finding fish. The dominate pattern is spinnerbaits and soft plastics in shallow water. Preferably with a creek channel or drain some where close. Sight fishing is working in clear water areas. Falcon is producing some really nice fish. All you hear from the tournament anglers is they can’t believe the quality of the fishery found on Falcon waters. It took 70+ lbs. to find the top ten and earn the privilege to fish on the fourth day. Tomorrow will tell the tail. It will take a 100+ lbs. to take top honors.
Tomorrow is the first day of the FLW tournament on Falcon and the stable water conditions that we have had for the past months has started it annual recession. We have lost several feet of water in the past two weeks and the fish that were in 3 and 4 feet of water are having to move with the falling water. Anglers pre-fishing are having to move with the fish. There is still a good spinnerbait bite in 4 to 8 foot of water and flipping bite in 8 to 12 foot. The fish are still biting and although the stringer weights are down a bit I still think the FLW Pros will find the big bags of fish that Falcon is famous for. It should take a four day total of over 100 lbs. to come out on top of the heap.
High Winds in the afternoon mad for a rough day fishing. The day started out cool and calm with fishing pretty easy. Caught several fish early on 1/2 oz. Jobaby “White Falcon Special”spinnerbaits. by 11:00 the winds had steadily increased to 20+ and had fish the protected waters out of the wind. Afternoon bite was better with about 20 fish. Most fish came from backs of pockets and coves in water from 3 to 12 feet.
